Chronophontia is a very international place, and the American patriotic holiday seems like a good time for everybody here to be patriotic.

Pandora, as you might surmise, is all American. Maryna is Polish (in honor of her creator, ) and is wearing Polish colors. Euthie is Transylvanian - Transylvania is part of Romania, and has a large Hungarian minority of whom Euthie is one - but she thinks of herself as Transylvanian, not Romanian or Hungarian. Hence the flag behind her - one of Transylvania's many flags.

About the flag: Transylvania has never had an Independence Day because technically it hasn't been independent. But Euthie saw Pandora and some others waving flags on a previous American Independence Day, and kind of wistfully remarked that she loved her own country too. So I did some surfing, and found a Transylvanian flag [link] . Transylvania has had several flags [link] - this one may be of German origin, since it shows the seven castles of Siebenburgen, the German name of Transylvania.

Time for a history lecture! If you've read this far, you may want to skip the following.

Euthie, as a vampire, is of course older than she looks. She was born in 1690, and grew up in one of the most eventful periods in Transylvania's history: the transition from loose Turkish rule to tight Austrian rule. Euthie gets her Transylvanian patriotism from her father the baron, who was initially pro-Austrian but became disillusioned and came to favor an independent Transylvania.
